چکیده

Simulation is inevitable for dimensioning interconnection networks for parallel computers. In this study, we present the application of a parallel eventdriven simulator for k-ary 2-cube wormhole-routing interconnection networks running on the Intel Paragon and discuss simulator speedup behavior and influence of the operation modes of the simulated network (synchronous, asynchronous, and mixed mode) on simulator and network performance. With our simulator, similar speedups of up to 6.7 for 8 processing nodes have been achieved for the different modes. The simulator shows only a slight increase in execution time if problem (network) size and number of PEs are scaled up proportionally. Furthermore, it is shown that synchronous and asynchronous networks can be simulated most efficiently and realistically with a synchronous simulator, while the mixed-mode network operation cannot be simulated synchronously but has to be simulated in a mixed-mode to obtain accurate network performance results.

Execution Based Evaluation of Multistage Interconnection Networks for Cache-Coherent Multiprocessors

In this paper, performance of multistage interconnection network with wormhole routing and packet switching has been evaluated for cache-coherent shared-memory multiprocessors. The traac in cache-coherent systems is characterized by traac bursts, one-to-many and many-to-one traac, and small xed length messages. The evaluation is based on execution-driven simulation using various applications. T...

Wormhole Routing in Parallel Computers

In order to offer low communication latency and reduced buffer requirements, wormhole routing has been used in almost all new generation parallel computers. It has been a powerful switching technique where its communication latency is distance insensitive. On the other hand, deadlock avoidance is the most critical issue in wormhole networks. If deadlock handling is not considered, wormhole rout...

On the Communication Latency of Wormhole Routed Interconnection Networks

Several analytical models have been proposed in the literature for wormhole -routed multicomputers. However, all these models have been discussed in the context of unicast communication and there has been comparatively little activity in the area of analytical modelling of collective communication algorithms like broadcast. To our best knowledge, this paper presents the first analytical model t...

Performance Evaluation of Switch-Based Wormhole Networks

Multistage interconnection networks (MINs) are a popular class of switch-based network architectures for constructing scalable parallel computers. Four wormhole MINs built from k ¥ k switches, where k = 2 j for some j, are considered in this paper: traditional MINs (TMINs), dilated MINs (DMINs), MINs with virtual channels (VMINs), and bidirectional MINs (BMINs). The first three MINs are unidire...
